Our Prep and Senior School students achieved outstanding results at the NSW VEX IQ State Championships on Sunday 9 November.
Knox Grammar School
On the line for Senior students were automatic qualification spots to National Championships (to be held in Adelaide this December), and four out of five our Senior teams came away with one of the much-coveted spots. Fifteen Prep teams attained a spot at the NSW State Championships – an amazing achievement. Four Prep teams made it through to the NSW State Championship Final Playoffs. Following on, six Prep teams have qualified for the National Championships.
In the High School Division, ‘1940A High-Q’ qualified for the elimination rounds as the top seed and continued their qualifications form all the way through to the finals, rewardingly being declared Tournament Champions.
In addition to the Tournament Champions award, they also took out the top award for Excellence. The Excellence Award recognises the one team throughout the tournament who is strong in every award category and possesses the best all-around skills.
Staying in the High School Division, ‘78887B Knox Knights’ also went through to the Nationals with strong overall performance throughout the tournament, punctuated by their Tournament Finalist Award.
Whilst ‘1940C Burnout’ fell short in the elimination rounds, they have also earned the right to travel to Adelaide through their work throughout the various qualification tournaments held through the year, culminating in them receiving the Create Award at the State Championships.
In the Middle School Division, Knox were well represented by both ‘1940B Axis’ and ‘1940D’.
‘1940B Axis’ qualified as the second seed after qualification rounds, and never looked back during the elimination rounds, facing opposition teams with courage and earning the Tournament Champions Award. Their strategy and robot building skills really shone through on the day, and they will be a force to be reckoned with in Adelaide.
Our final team to be travelling to Adelaide with an automatic qualification spot is ‘1940D’. The School's youngest team showed that age is no barrier, by not only performing well throughout both qualification and elimination matches, but also earning the highly prestigious Design Award. The Design Award recognises the team with the best engineering notebook and team interview. Well deserved!
Team 2076E ‘Soggy Syntax’ earned three prestigious awards (Teamwork Champion, Design Award, and Robot Skills Champion) while achieving a remarkable 235-point high score and advancing to the finals. Their individual skills score of 294 means the team is currently ranked first in Australia. They have triple-qualified for the Australian National Championship hosted in Adelaide in December.
Finals Qualifiers: Six Knox Prep teams advanced to the finals: Elementary Teams ‘R2-D2’ and ‘Cyberstorm’, and Middle School teams ‘Soggy Syntax’, Atom’, ‘Everybody Do Da Flop’ and ‘Negative Four’.
Award Winners: Beyond the finals qualifiers, Elementary Team ‘Cyberstorm’ received the Build Award, and Middle School Team ‘Negative Four earned the Judges Award.
We wish all our teams travelling to Adelaide the best of luck!

“Visual Arts deepens our understanding of ourselves, our communities, and the world around us,” says Wendy Shearer (Visual Arts Teacher and Head of Department, Senior School). “Through creative practice, students explore ideas, communicate experiences, and develop personal ways of seeing and interpreting the world. Art becomes both a form of expression and a means of connecting across time, place, and culture.
