Unique AFX Camp Experiences

We asked Senior Cadet Under Officer and Ravenswood student CUO Sophia (Year 12), Knox Cadet Prefect and Unit 2IC CUO James (Year 12), and Knox Ravenswood Army Cadet Unit Commanding Officer MAJ(AAC) Ainsley Hart about their personal experiences. This is what they said:

How was the 2026 AFX Camp, and what was unique for this year?

CUO Sophia: A key point of difference this year was an integration of activities across AFX. Focussing on biohazards, cadets experienced an immersive environment that ultimately enhanced engagement and realism for Year 9 students.

Additionally, a unique feature of this year’s camp was the strong emphasis on community service, with cadets giving back to the Lithgow community. This included painting the headquarters of Lithgow’s Volunteer Rescue Association, planting approximately 400 trees for bush regeneration for Lithgow and conducting bushland clean-up activities. This component of the camp added a meaningful dimension, reinforcing both schools’ values of service, teamwork and community engagement. It was an incredibly successful AFX.

What were the learnings to take forward into 2027?

CUO Sophia: Looking ahead to 2027, I hope each cadet carries forward a strong understanding of what their training is ultimately building them towards – the responsibility that comes with their rank and the importance of caring for those they lead and those around them. I hope each cadet understands the value of the program in fostering commitment; while reinforcing resilience, teamwork and leadership developed through shared challenges, equipping cadets with skills that extend well beyond the classroom.

MAJ(AAC) Ainsley Hart: A camp of this nature is about preparation on many levels, from individual responsibility such as packing and self-management, through to the deliberate design of training and activities. Cadets absorb these lessons in different ways, often realising their importance through experience rather than instruction alone. This layered approach is what makes learning at AFX so effective.

How does the co-educational collaboration between Ravenswood and Knox, and working together as a team, contribute to your personal growth journey?

CUO James: I think that the co-educational collaboration between Ravenswood and Knox has contributed to the personal growth journey of not only myself, but for all cadets who take part in the program. With the wealth of diverse perspectives we have in the unit, you get to experience real-word team environments which then inform interpersonal skills, empathy and communicative ability (invaluable assets to take with you outside of school, and the cadet program).

What were some memorable AFX moments?

CUO James: From snowfall to a kangaroo running through camp, AFX 2026 was filled with memorable and unexpected moments. A key highlight was the return of the Lost City hike — a challenging but rewarding trek overlooking the pagoda rock formations of the Gardens of Stone Conservation Area. Cadets also participated in a wide range of activities, including bush chapel, abseiling, the mud run, and Pioneers. Student-led components, such as Operations platoon and the night exercises, were particularly well received. During downtime, cadets built strong camaraderie through war cries and company competitions.

What was the experience like for staff involved in AFX?

MAJ(AAC) Ainsley Hart: For staff, the AFX experience is quite unlike day‑to‑day teaching and offers an invaluable chance to engage with students in a different setting. It was particularly rewarding to see staff new to Cadets enjoying the experience and connecting so positively with students.
